Waste in School Education | Branding + campaign

The WISE owl was conceptualised, designed and created by hand at Purple Circle for Nottingham City Council's Waste in School Education (WISE) project.

WISE branding for Nottingham City Council was applied across badges, posters and a cuddly owl named 'Mr R' by local children

To reflect the message of the campaign, all materials were made or printed using recycled or reused materials.

The Project

Introducing 'Mr R' – the latest feathered friend to join the Purple Circle team. He’s a very special hand-made mascot, lovingly put together by Johanna, using recycled clothing, plastic lids, buttons and felt. Mr R was born when Nottingham City Council’s Recycling team asked us to create a campaign which could be used in Nottingham schools to promote their 'Waste In School Education' (WISE) drive – the key messages being ‘reduce, reuse, repair and recycle’.

The campaign, headed up by Mr R, uses a collage of different materials laid over different paper stocks to create a reused, hand-crafted look. This look and feel has been carried over school certificates printed on the back of used cereal packets, on school posters and flyers, badges and a 12-foot interactive game, where children have to place cut-out felt objects (shaped like bottles, tins, etc) on a ‘scale’ based on how long they think it’ll take to rot.
